How would you feel if I told you that there is such a thing as comfortable career yoga pants? Yes, they exist and they are manufactured by the masterminds at Betabrand, and the brand was kind enough to send me a sample pair of their Athleisure Black Boot-Cut Dress Yoga Pants to share my experience with my readers.
Let’s face it: Building a fashion-forward career wardrobe can be complicated, especially because career clothes can be very uncomfortable. To me, the worst part was finding career pants that looked good in my petite yet curvy frame and didn’t dig uncomfortably in my midriff area. For the most part, any career pant that I have tried on is a miss. They are either too baggy or too uncomfortable in the waist area, which is a deal-breaker if you need to be sitting in an office for the most part of your day.
I must not be alone in my fashion woes, as Betabrand has launched a genius piece of clothing: Dress. Yoga. Pants. Keep reading to learn more about my experience!
The Idea: Dress Yoga Pants
Betabrand is an online clothing community. Based in San Francisco, it’s a fashion think tank that creates, manufactures, and produces innovative fashion pieces using crowdsourcing. The Athleisure Black Boot-Cut Dress Yoga Pants ($78) are, not surprisingly, one of their most successful designs.
Designed by Sarah James, these dress yoga pants combine a soft, stretchy knit with a dress-pant styling. Sarah’s idea was to create a pair of career pants that could withstand a woman’s day without making her feel uncomfortable. The Betabrand team really hit the nail on the head with this idea, as these dress yoga pants can literally double as workout wear and are perfect for performing yoga poses while you work on your umpteenth spreadsheet. Talk about balancing your work and social life!
My experience with Betabrand Dress Yoga Pants
Betabrand has launched a whole collection of comfortable and fashionable dress yoga pants in every single style under the sun. I was personally most drawn to their boot-cut black dress pants to accommodate my snow boots in the winter and my pretty sandals in the summer. Plus, I personally think that boot-cut pants always look a tad more professional in my body, as they balance out my curves very nicely.
I have put to the test Betabrand’s career yoga pants for over a month and I honestly can’t say anything bad about them. They are extremely comfortable, and their elastic waistband is a life saver! I’ve worn them for up to 12 hours (and even more that very exhausting day when I wrote several articles for 10 straight hours) without feeling the usual tightness that comes with career pants.
To put them to the test, I’ve worn them in the subway rush hours, and they really have withstood the stuff that nightmares are made of without a single crease. Plus, I’ve also taken them to an intro yoga class and they are so stretchy that I was able to contort into really strange poses without feeling restrained. In one of the photos, you can see me before riding a Citybike in the pants to beat rush hour. That’s an absolute winner in my book!
So yes, the Betabrand dress yoga pants are extremely comfortable and stretchy. However, you need to give them some extra love to care for them properly. I like to machine wash them dry and, to avoid creases, I lay them flat to dry. Hear this: No Ironing Required.
Say what?, you may ask if you live in a teensy apartment in New York. Here’s my crazy little trick: Put your Trader Joe’s bags to another good use. I have a tiny clothes drying rack from Ikea, and I use the “sandwich method” to make sure my pants are creaseless. Just line the top part with your Trader Joe’s Bags, put a bath-size towel on top, and lay your pants on top to dry. They will look perfect and you will have saved your floors from puddles of water.
Finally, and with regards to fit and sizing, these pants are surprisingly accurate. They hug my curves in the right places without leaving a terrible gap in the waistband, which I attribute to the remarkably stretchy fabric. Betabrand suggests that you size up if you’re between sizes as the pants might shrink a bit in the wash.
Plus, each size comes with up to four inseam options: Short petite, petite, regular, and long. This is a terrific idea, as they make sure you’re getting the pants that really cater to your needs, and you don’t have to spend any extra bucks on the tailor. Plus, these yoga pants come in different cuts, including skinny-leg, cropped-leg, straight-leg, and leggings.
In my experience, these are the most comfortable career pants I’ve ever owned and I’m going to personally order them in other colors to match my jackets. To learn more about these career yoga pants, you can visit Betabrand’s dedicated site here. Also, don’t hesitate to sign up for their newlsetter or scour their coupon codes; they sometimes run extremely good promotions and you can get your career yoga pants for even less money.
To show you how they look, I’ve paired them up with a career top by Express, my favorite sandals by Aerosoles, a Chinese-inspired jacket by H&M, and the most wonderful handbag by Henri Bendel.
