Review: Kali Boxes, the chic toxin-free tampons

I love subscription boxes. They’re a great way to solve my beauty woes and discover new brands at a sweet, sweet price! I want to share with you my experience with Kali Boxes, a 100% organic and biodegradable feminine hygiene subscription box.

Long gone are the days when having a period was something shameful, or not to speak too openly about. I still remember as a young girl trying to keep secretive when the time of the month came, only confiding in my closest friends.

I’m really glad the conversation around something so natural to womanhood has been normalized by the media, and I was thrilled when I discovered there were such things as organic hygiene products that came to your doorstep in a pretty box. The name of this genius invention is named Kali Boxes, a company specialized in delivering chic organic tampons.

Welcome to the period revolution!

What’s in a Kali Box?

Inside a Kali Box you’ll find an assortment of 14 organic-certified cotton tampons that come in Super, Regular, or half and half, depending on your needs. Additionally, every box features a handful of wipettes individually packaged to bring with you everywhere and a surprise beauty product, because you deserve to feel and look amazing every day of the month! What’s more, the packaging is so beautiful and Instagrammeable that it looks extremely elegant in your mailbox and your bathroom.

My Experience

I’ve been looking for organic cotton feminine hygiene products for a while. The regular brands include moisture-wicking and odor-controling synthetic substances that I seem to be increasingly allergic to. Kali Box includes tampons that are made of 100% organic cotton and nothing else, and are free from synthetic fibers, chemicals, chlorine, bleach and pesticides. And I can’t really tell the difference between using a regular brand vs. Kali in the sense that their absorbency is exactly what they promise minus the chemical ickies. A total win for my health!

The wipettes are a very nice bonus that comes in handy to bring with you everywhere.  Their formula is 100% sulfate & paraben free, and according to their website includes 99.98% natural ingredients. This percentage seems to me a bit high given their formula contains a few synthetics that I would personally recommend the brand to eliminate (more specifically propylene glycol, fragrance and polysorbate 20, which don’t score terribly well on the EWG database and kind of defeat the purpose of using organic cotton in the tampons.) However, they are one of the cleanest alternatives I have found in terms of having a formula without sulfates and harsh ingredients.

The small print

This subscription costs $19.99 per month and includes delivery. Although it might seem pricey, I have run the math and it’s not much more different than buying a box of organic cotton tampons and the wipettes. Factoring in that you don’t have to commute to the store (which in New York sets you back $2.75 for each trip on the subway) and that it also includes an extra natural beauty product, I think Kali Box has a fair price for the quality of the products inside the box.

And because they donate one dollar for every box to Girl Up, I feel I’m using my dollars for good. For those of you unfamiliar with Girl Up, it’s a charity in charge of delivering hygienic products to girls and ladies who don’t have access to them otherwise. Ladies helping ladies!

All in all, Kali is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to the world of organic and toxin-free personal hygiene products.
